Orphaned after a Nazi air bomb, a young Parisian girl, Paulette, runs into an older peasant boy, Michel, and the two become close. Togetherthey try to create sense of the world around themattempting to cope with death because they make a burial ground to Paulette's pet dog. However, Paulette's stay with Michel's family is jeopardized by the harsh realities of wartime.
