Jimmy is just really a child psychologist who uses their or her own playbook, but if he is brought in to work with Ellie, he's wholly unprepared due to his subject-- even a genius with nothing to lose. As he starts to know the amount of her capacities before it's too late for them both, he struggles to overcome her defenses.
