After the war, Dr. Michele Wolf, a Jew who had been imprisoned by the Nazis in a concentration camp, returns to her apartment in Paris. She is unaware that while she was away, her husband, the dashing gigolo and chess master Stanislaw Pilgrin, had an affair with her stepdaughter Fabi.
