Ben (Glenn Ford) and Marion (Henry Fonda) are two cowboys who subsist by breaking wild horses. Their frequent boss Jim (Chill Wills), who always has the upper hand, convinces them to accept a generic horse in exchange for a portion of their income. When Ben discovers the horse is unrideable, he devises a plan to take it to a rodeo and wager other cowhands that they will be unable to ride it.
